Descaling a Tankless Water Heater
Tankless water heater care
A tankless water heater makes hot water on demand, and it does it through narrow passages. Mineral scale from hard water coats those passages a little at a time. Flow drops, temperatures wander, and one morning the shower tells you what the calendar should have: it is time to descale.
What descaling is
Descaling circulates a descaling solution, often a vinegar solution or a product made for it, through the heater with a small pump for a set time, dissolves the mineral buildup, and then flushes the unit clean. Many units also have a small inlet filter that catches sediment, and it wants rinsing on the same visit.
How often
It depends on the water. Hard campground water builds scale faster than soft water, and full-season use builds it faster than weekends. Manufacturers publish an interval for their units; follow theirs. The honest rule from our side of the wrench: if the water temperature starts swinging or the flow feels thin, do not wait for the calendar.
What we do not do
We do not open up sealed components, and we do not improvise around gas or electrical connections. Descaling the water path with the maker's procedure is maintenance. Anything past that is a qualified technician's job, and we treat it that way.
